WHAT IS LABIAPLSTY?

A labiaplasty is a surgery performed on the female genitals to improve the appearance for aesthetic and functional reasons. In recent years, women are more aware of their genital appearance due to the popularity of genital hair removal and the proliferation of images that are publicly available on the internet. This results in withdrawal from social and sexual situations that may require visualization of their genitals, including wearing tight swimsuits, group showers, or sexual intimacy. They often avoid gynecological exams and are too self-conscious to mention their concerns to the doctor. In addition, many women with enlarged labia minora/majora or clitoral hood complain of discomfort during sexual intercourse, exercise, or when wearing tight clothing. Massively enlarged labia cause difficulty with hygiene, interfere with sexual intercourse, hamper urinary self catheterization, and cause chronic inflammation.

HOW IS LABIAPLASTY PERFORMED?

A labiaplasty can be performed under general or local anesthesia. The patient is placed in stirrups similar to the ones at a gynecologist's office. An individualized procedure is then performed to address the patient's concerns about her anatomy. Excess skin is removed and only dissolvable sutures are used to close the skin. The patient will recover for a short time in the post-surgical area before returning home.

AM I A CANDIDATE LABIAPLASTY?

A good candidate for labiaplasty will be a healthy individual who has concerns of her genitalia due to bulging or enlargement. Concerns include: withdrawal from social and sexual situations that may require visualization of their genitals, including wearing tight swimsuits, group showers, or sexual intimacy. Other concerns include: enlarged labia minora/majora or clitoral hood resulting in discomfort during sexual intercourse, exercise, or when wearing tight clothing as well as difficulty with hygiene or cause chronic inflammation. Patients who often avoid gynecological exams and are too self-conscious to mention their concerns to the doctor are encouraged to consult with Dr. Chua, providing a judgement-free environment to voice your concerns.
